The Horse in History |
|
Horses, as representatives of nature, have been on earth for millions of years, and have been in partnership with man for at least 6,000 years. From such examples as the Paleolithic cave art at Lascaux, we know that even in the earliest of times, horses were important to the survival of man. Continuing through the centuries, from carrying warriors into battle, to working in the fields to help farmers harvest crops, the horse has been not only a trusted companion, but also an equine assistant that was crucial to man’s very survival. At least in part because of man’s relationship with horses, the two worlds coexisted in balance. As “Man’s World” evolved, it took us into the Industrial Revolution, and during this period, the horse’s role in society began to change. With an onslaught of new technology, from new machinery used to harvest crops, to the invention of the automobile, the horse became more recreational and disposable than an animal necessary for man’s survival (or so we thought!). |
