Head down

As a part of the bridgework, use the head down exercise to test the horse’s willingness to trust you by “giving you his head.” This is also a wonderful tool for those of us who may be a little too short to reach that ear or bridle path for clipping!

Start by “asking” with your arm across the horse’s head. This obviously follows the steps taken during the bridgework so that the horse will allow you this much freedom! After the horse will “give you his head” in this manner, ask with the same voice commands, but use your fingers to put pressure under the girth area while asking. Once the horse will give from this command, you will have an easier time when tightening the girth.

This is a great test to see if the horse has any issues with his head, neck and girth area.

Helps with tightening the girth the first time.
